5 expensive Easter eggs for sale

You know Easter is nearing when supermarkets start stocking chocolate and candied eggs. Easter eggs have become a big part of Easter celebrations worldwide and is slowly catching on in Singapore.

While the ones sold in stores are reasonably priced, some Easter eggs over the recent years were sold at an astronomical price.

The Guinness World Record holder for the most expensive non-jewelled chocolate egg that was sold at an auction belongs to London chocolatier William Curley in March 2012.

The giant chocolate egg was bought by technology investor Cyrus Vandrevala for ￡£7,000 (S$13,175) at the Faberge Egg Hunt, with proceeds going to two charities.

Called the Golden Speckled Egg, it weighs 110 pounds and is accented with edible gold leaf.

Before you baulk at the price, an even more expensive egg was created earlier in 2007. British departmental store Harrods displayed a chocolate Easter egg with a ￡£1-million diamond necklace in its store.

The Belgian chocolate half-egg was designed by Belgium chocolatier Karel Peeters and the necklace was designed by London jeweller Edwin Solomon.

In 2006, La Maison du Chocolat displayed a £￡50,000 diamond-studded chocolate egg at its store for sale, and two guards were tasked to protect it. 100 half-carat diamonds circle the circumference of the 65cm-tall egg which was filled with peach and apricot chocolates and pralines.

Unfortunately, there were no reports of the egg being sold.
